Only a few years ago, using your cell phone in public drew rude glances and quiet murmurs of disapproval from passersby. But in 2009, as the cell phone has become a more ubiquitous part of our lives, people seem to be using them everywhere – in restaurants, waiting in line at the post office and even the most hallowed of monuments to polite behavior, the movie theater.
So what is cell phone etiquette in 2009? Does such a thing even exist anymore? The following guide provides a brief overview of what it means to be a polite cell phone user in the 21st century, and how you can stay connected to the most important people in your life…without offending them (or total strangers and acquaintances).
Proper Cell Phone Etiquette Tips
You don’t need to be a student of Emily Post to engage in the following niceties – each one a small tip for living well and getting the most out of your cell phone.
· Watch the conversation in tight places. If you’re sharing a small space with other people, consider this the wrong place to be using your cell phone. In today’s society, personal space is at a premium – don’t make matters worse by injecting your conversation into the equation.
· Don’t be a show off. Economic times are tight, and nobody wants to have your expensive cell phone waved in their face as a sign of conspicuous consumption. If you really want to show off about something, why not brag about how you saved big money on a discount unlocked cell phone, loaded with features that you bought online.
· Don’t screen all your calls. It’s easy to go a little “power mad” with the caller ID system on your cell phone. But try to pick up the occasional call. If you get branded as someone who screens every single call you make, people will stop trying to contact you!
· Keep your voice mails brief. Nobody needs to hear your life story on their voice mail inbox. Just stick to the vital info: name, phone, when you called and why you called. There is nothing worse than having to listen to a message that’s as long as a Stephen King book on tape – and never gets to the point.
· Don’t talk so LOUD. It’s a misconception as old as the device itself, yet people still believe they need to shout in order to be heard by the party on the other end of the call. NEWSFLASH: Technology has come a long way, and your voice is properly amplified without you shouting like a soybean trader on the floor of the NYSE.
· Using text or other functions while driving. Certain things are a breach of etiquette, while others make you a danger to yourself or others. Texting while you drive is so dangerous that recent studies have found that it is on par with drinking-and-driving in terms of the number of accidents it causes. Perhaps that’s why California and other states have created no-texting laws to match their hands-free cell phone laws.

Connect using Outlook, and you’ll never have to search for a phone number or email address again! Store it once and forget about it! For those individuals who are constantly travelling and on the road or in the sky, a PDA mobile phone makes sense. It’s the perfect gift and travel companion! Sometimes, it can be difficult to take a break from your day to find an Internet café or office that will allow you to connect and check your email and important messages. Now, imagine being able to access your information from anywhere in the world! You could be having dinner, in a car, or in between meetings, and you’ll never miss those important messages ever again! It’s important to note, your PDA cell phone contains the Internet, which will allow you to surf the web. So, now you can book your hotel reservations, find a phone number for a taxi, look for a restaurant in your area – it’s all possible without having to exhaust other options! Sync your phone with your laptop, and access your work, no matter where you are. Access flight information with the touch of a button! Get movie listings and find out where some of the best attractions are when you’re visiting a new town. It’s obvious that owning a PDA cell phone has its advantages. Remember, PDA phones are extremely lightweight and portable. So much power for such a tiny device – and to think, many phones will give you the option to add more memory if you need it, for additional storage! It’s also good to know that many companies will also throw in extra cellular accessories, such as a headset, leather case, belt clip or hand strap. These always come in handy to protect and maintain the look of your equipment. They’re also very suitable when on the road. Having a headset allows you to use your phone while on the road keeping you safe as you drive with both hands on the wheel! If you’re going to use your phone on the road while driving, at least be safe! Be conscious of yourself and the other drivers around you! It doesn’t stop there! You can upgrade to a Bluetooth headset, or consider buying an extra adapter, charger, or magnet mount antenna set. You could also consider getting a starter kit that comes with the essentials to make the most out of your PDA cellular phone. One thing is for sure. The rave about PDA cell phones is sweeping the nation. Stop and think for a moment. Many people carry around more than one of the following – a cell phone, an agenda or journal, a PDA system, a camera, an MP3 player. Well, all you need is the PDA mobile! It will replace all of these rather expensive items and provide for its consumers the convenience of owning the best all-in-one device to ever hit the market!

In today’s marketplace, there are so many cell phones and cell phone service providers that many consumers do not know one from another. This has led to the crime of cell phone fraud becoming more frequent.
The FCC (Federal Communications Commission) defines cell phone fraud as the unauthorized use, tampering, or manipulation of a cell phone or service. As this crime began to rise in the 1990s, the Wireless Telephone Protection Act was passed in 1998 to criminalize the use, possession, manufacture, or sale of hardware or software used to clone fraudulent cell phones. This cloning is a type of cell phone fraud.
Every cell phone has a unique factory-set electronic serial number (ESN) and its own telephone number. Certain people will illegally monitor radio transmissions from the cell phones of legitimate subscribers. These individual then can create a cloned cell phone, which is a cell phone that has been reprogrammed to transmit the serial number and phone number of another legitimate cell phone. As both the cell phone and its clone have the same identifying numbers, the cellular system can not distinguish the difference. The legitimate subscriber who owns the original cell phone will end up getting billed for calls from both the phones. The agency warns that if when you receive your monthly cell phone bill and there are charges on it that you do not recognize, you should contact your cell phone service provider immediately.
The cell phone manufacturers are helping in the fight against cell phone cloning by making improvements on their products to make the cell phones more resistant to reprogramming. These companies have had quite a bit of success with their efforts and some of them feel that the problem should be totally resolved in a few years..
Another type of cell phone fraud is subscriber fraud. This is basically another form of identity theft. The perpetrator uses someone else’s name and social security number to purchase a cell phone and sets up an account with a cell phone service provider. The charges for the phone and any calls that the person makes is billed to the person whose name is on the account. If you are the victim of subscriber fraud you should report it to the authorities immediately a well as contacting your cell phone company, although it will probably be a long and complicated process to get the situation straightened out.
As with any other types of identity theft, there are precautions that you can take. You should shred any documents that contain your personal information, such as old check stubs and bank statements. It is a proven fact that many of these thieves retrieve the information that they need to obtain someone else’s identity by going through that person’s trash. You should also avoid giving out your personal information to any company or Web site that asks for it, usually under the guise of a charity or a sweepstakes contest. You may also want to refrain from carrying your social security card around with you in your purse or wallet as well as any other documents that may have this all-important number written on them in case your purse or wallet is lost or stolen. If the thief does not have your social security number, he cannot steal your identity as easily.
Cell phone cloning has been decreasing with the help of the manufacturers but subscriber fraud is happening more and more frequently. Again, keeping your personal information protected can prevent you from being a victim of these identity thieves.

Ronald Herberman, director of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, shocked just about all law-abiding scientists (abiding by laws of physics, that is) with his warning last week to his faculty and staff that cell phones might pose a cancer risk.
This is troublesome because this time a really smart person is saying it, not just another nutcase.
The basics still ring true, and Herberman admitted as much: There’s no convincing evidence that cell phone radiation causes cancer. Nor is there plausible biological or physical reasoning for why it would cause cancer.
Herberman said his warning is based on early, unpublished data from a 13-country study on cell phone use. Scientists tend to be wary of preliminary results, and many are scratching their heads over why Herberman would make such a stern and public warning now.
Herberman countered that until there’s definitive proof that cell phones are harmless, users should practice some caution.
Play it safe Herberman’s recommendations to minimize exposure are a godsend, but not for the reasons he intended. Limit conversations to a few minutes? Yes, particularly when it’s about some stupid shoe sale you need to tell everyone about. Avoid cell phone use in buses and trains to limit second-hand exposure? Yes, particularly when I’m trying to sleep.
Limit use in cars, because high speeds force the phone to maximize power to find relay stations? Yes, yes: Let’s shorten the bumper sticker reading “Shut up and drive” to just “shut up.” This will definitely save lives as fewer chatty drivers means fewer deadly traffic accidents.
If only Crazy Frong ringtone caused cancer.
Yet how cautious must we be? Devra Lee Davis, Herberman’s colleague, told the Associated Press, “The question is do you want to play Russian roulette with your brain.”
Sounds frightening, but Russian roulette is played with one bullet in a six-shooter. Cell phone Russian roulette has perhaps one bullet in a gun that can hold several million.
Einstein and cell phones far from a scientific-illiterate technophobe, Herberman is author or co-author of over 700 peer-reviewed cancer articles dating back to the 1960s. He’s smarter than me and likely you.
Yet Einstein, in a way, disproved the notion that cell phone radiation causes cancer. It’s called the photoelectric effect: Light is composed of photons which, when above a threshold energy, can dislodge electrons from atoms for example, break chemical bonds in DNA and cause cancerous mutations.
That threshold energy is near the ultraviolet part of the electromagnetic spectrum, thousands of times more energetic than cell phone radio waves. UV, X-rays and gamma rays cause cancer. These photons are like golf balls, whereas radio photons are like cotton balls. You can throw millions of cotton balls against a window; it just won’t break.
Heated arguments and hoaxes despite myriad studies showing no increased cancer risk from up to 20 years of cell phone use, some scientists continue to probe as they should, given the omnipresence of cell phones.
One alternate theory is that heat generated by cell phones can cook brain cells. This notion inspired a well-known hoax a decade ago, a demonstration of how two cell phones could cook an egg in 65 minutes. The lark seemed plausible and was illustrated in a series of stills on the Internet.
Then Cardo Systems, a provider of Bluetooth headsets, made videos of cells phones teaming up in groups of threes or fours to pop popcorn. Kernels are digitally removed from the video as popped popcorn is dropped onto the table. This publicity stunt proved successful enough to convince many of the power of cell phone radiation.
One problem with the heat theory is that the sun can heat your head far more efficiently than a cell phone. And your body does a rather decent job at regulating heat, anyway.
Cancer calling each type of living tissue absorbs radiation at a different frequency. So it is plausible that cell phone radiation bypasses the skin and skull and is absorbed selectively by brain tissue.
But scientists see only marginal evidence for changes at the cellular level induced by cell phone radiation in Petri dishes, fruit flies and mice. Similarly in human studies, such as the 13-country study Herberman was privy to, called INTERPHONE, there is at best only an inkling of evidence that cell phones might cause cancer if you use them long enough, for 30 or more years.
If there’s a cancer association, it might be from the stress of being plugged in to a cell phone 24/7. We need to relax.
No one seems to mention how many lives are saved by cell phones. Police and emergency crews are informed of trouble nearly instantly now. Banning the technology would be shortsighted.
But seeing how millions of people still smoke and have unprotected sex, despite warnings, Herberman’s message likely won’t make a dent in changing behavior.

As cellular phone usage is becoming more popular, the question has arisen as to the effect of these devices on today’s society. Does the use of cell phones help to expand communication between people or diminish it? There are two opposing opinions that deal with communication and cell phone use.
Cell phone advocates point out that thanks to these devices, you can speak to anyone in the world. In the workplace, these devices are indispensable. It is easier for companies in two different countries to do business with each other. They can also be used to hold interoffice meetings between various departments and branches. Cell phone usage can help you to perform better at work, since the office can contact you whenever it needs to. With the Bluetooth devices that are available with many of the newer models of these phones, you can download your files from your office computer that will enable you to continue your work on your personal computer at home. You can also use your cell phone features such as the calendar to remind yourself of important meetings and appointments.
Cell phones can also allow you to stay in closer contact with your family members. Your children can call you if they need a ride home or your spouse can call to remind you to pick up a gallon of milk on the way home. For family member who live out of town, you can talk for hours at little or no cost to you. Cell phones seem to be a perfect way to bring people closer together.
Other individuals feel that cell phones are actually breaking down communications between people. These opponents of cell phone use point out that there are times that you may not want to disturbed by your office. If you have a cell phone, this contact is almost unavoidable.
There may also a lack of personal communication in your workplace. Before cell phones, you might have had to leave your office several times a day to talk to an associate, greeting other employees along the way. Now you may find that you can go all day without seeing another living soul.
Having the ability to bring you work home can also lead to you spending less time with your family. If you are able to work at home, you probably will, which will cut into any quality time that you may have planned to spend with your spouse and children.
Family relationships may also be harmed by the use of cell phones. You may find that you talk to your children more on the phone than you do face to face. Your children may communicate more with their friends than they do with other family members. Many families may have forgotten how to turn off their cell phones and speak to each other.
A child’s written skills may suffer due to the use of text messaging. This form of communication has developed its own language using initials and shorter forms of ordinary words. Children that are growing up using this type of format can carry it over into their written and oral communications.
As well as a lack of communication in the workplace and at home, people do not talk to strangers as they once did. In the past, people who rode the same bus to work or shared a taxi would strike up a conversation. Thanks to cell phones, people are having their own conversations, missing the opportunity to begin new friendships. People have also ceased to talk to their neighbors. In today’ society, you may not even know who your neighbors are.
Both sides to the communication issue have made valid points. While cell phones are great communication tools, they are not the only ones. You need to remember to turn your cell phone off every once in awhile to help you stay involved in the world around you.

ll phone is in no way in comparison to a lost tooth. Because with a missing cell phone, you can substitute it with a real one right away. Except possibly for the phone “body number”, you can even secure the same and exact unit that was lost.
And rightly so, there are lots of good reasons to purchasing a used cell phone. Let’s talk about convenience first. Buying a pre owned cell phone will save you from hassles and sickening formalities of signing a contract with cell phone companies. Most of us have been there and there’s no prize for the discomforting feeling of having to read again all those pages of warranties and rules just because your phone was lost or stolen. Activating pre owned cell phones only takes just minutes and can be done right at the comfort of your own sofa.
For example: If you are a subscriber to Cingular, T-Mobile, or ATT, simply remove your SIM card from underneath your cell phone battery (in most cases, this is where you will find the SIM), and re-insert it into your newly bought pre owned cell phone, and then the problem’s fixed! Yes, you heard it right, there’s no need to worry much over losing a phone because the solution is as easy as simply going down to your local cell phone providers’ place of business and asking them for a new SIM card. For Verizon, Metro PCS, and the like, where SIM card is of no use, you only have to dial *611 on your newly acquired pre owned cell phone, and a customer representative from your local phone provider will provision your phone with your existing account over the air.
And then we talk about practicality. The financial hassles of purchasing a new cell phone (indeed, new ones can be very expensive!) is apparently an irrelevant topic considering that you can often have a pre owned cell phone from the neighboring shops. You will save considerable amount of money with used cell phone than if you buy a new one. Plus, the great thing is, pre owned cell phone works just as well. To illustrate my point: A new Blackberry 8700 can go as high as $299, a used Blackberry 8700 can be obtained for only $129. Why dispose that huge amount of money? Buy the savings instead for better-tasting oatmeal!
Well, I already talked about two huge reasons (convenience and practicality) and they basically cover everything why you should buy a pre owned cell phone, but they are too concentrated on you and you. I have to kick one in that’s for the whole community: purchasing used cell phones will do something good for the environment. Cell phones are made up of various toxic chemicals that include lead and mercury. Over time, these harmful chemicals will leak out, and once in the ground, will eventually enter our water system. That only spells a bad future for us, a horrible future for our children. And what’s even sadder to realize is that many, if not most of these discarded cell phones, are far from being useless.
We might be at the mercy of our dear dentist if we lost a tooth, but I hope I made it clear here that we should not feel the same way if we lost a cell phone. Now we comprehend what to do and how simple it is to solve the dilemma on “lost cell phone”.

Cell phone use in schools has dramatically changed since 911. When I started out as an administrator pagers were forbidden in school because they were associated with drug trafficking. If a student didn’t want to turn over their pager it was considered a fourth degree disorderly conduct offense, and the principal could file a police report. I don’t believe that it is a state policy that cell phones should be confiscated if they are in plain view in school. Each district probably does have their own policy on cell phones which varies from town to town and state to state. I think what we are looking for here is what we do with the distraction of cell phone use in school? Because of the hoards of recent school shooting that everyone knows about, and the fear of terrorism many parents feel more comfortable sending their child to school with a cell phone so they can get in touch with them when they want to, and in the event of a school emergency. The problems that schools run into is the blatant use of cell phones in school during class time and the disrespectful attitudes that students have when the teacher attempts to confiscate the phone. I have been through this nightmare, so let me see if I can shed some light on this for you.
90% of students are going to bring a cell phone to school. Even in the elementary grades students come to school with a cell phone. Both of my daughter’s carry a cell phone with them all the time. The cell phones are turned off and they are never to be used in the school building during school hours. Do I ever call my oldest daughter during the school day? The answer is no. Would I call her if I knew the school was going through a crisis situation? The answer is yes. If we know that kids have cell phones on them our request should be to keep them off during school hours and keep them out of sight. As a principal I am not going to go through the process of frisking kids to see if they have a cell phone. To me it’s out of sight, out of mind.
If I was to be walking down the hall and find a student talking on a cell phone and there were other students around I would ask to see the student privately and confiscate the phone. My comment to him would be, “Give me the phone, and I will return it to you at the end of the day.” The biggest concern that kids have is not getting the cell phone back. I make them aware that I will return the phone. I don’t want their phone or the responsibility that goes with it. By the time the student comes to my office to pick up the phone I will have already called the parent and made them aware of the infraction and asked them to please talk to their child about the blatant use of a cell phone. If I couldn’t get in touch with the parent I would call until I did. When the student came down to the office to pick up the phone I would give him his phone back. My goal is to remove the phone from the mainstream of the school until the end of the day, not to take a student’s property and hang on to it until a parent comes in.
Cell phone use is not going to go away. We need to have policies that address acceptable use of cell phones in school, not forbid the use of them. By forbidding students to have a cell phone in their possession we will only be creating a rule that we can’t enforce.
Howard
The demands of kids are getting more and more difficult to keep up with. Once upon a time the biggest thing on a twelve year-old’s wish list was a new bicycle. Now kids want cell phones at younger and younger ages. How old is old enough to purchase the ever desired cell phone? How young is too young?
Cell phone shopping for younger children can be very difficult. Depending on the age of the child it is possible they have not developed enough self restraint to handle a cell phone. School work may suffer as may other social relationships.
Cell phones now come with internet access, which can present dangers unknown to your child. Easily downloadable information may not be age appropriate. Cell phones also offer children private communication abilities through text messaging.
It is not necessary to activate all of the possible features that come with a cell phone, but understanding your own child’s limitations can help you know what is truly appropriate for them at their age. Private texting can lead to highly inappropriate conversations. Unlike instant messaging or phone conversations, texts can be deleted permanently and a parent has no recourse to determine whether a child is having innocent conversations with their friends or are being enticed into dangerous and self destructive behaviors.
They now have cell phones more appropriately geared toward young children. These phones come with a parental control feature that allow access to preset phone numbers such as reaching mom at work, 911 access, and several preset phone numbers of the parents choice, The cell phone requires a pass code to access any changes to the phone’s capabilities to prevent the child from listing their own phone numbers in their cell phone.
The appropriate age for taking a child cell phone shopping is truly up to the parent. If a parent thinks that a cell phone has beneficial uses for their child and can handle the limitations imposed as well as basic honesty, then cell phones can be excellent lessons in responsibility. Cell phones can help teach self imposed limitations as well as enhance parental communications. A parent can reach their child at all times to inform them of changes or request their presence at home.
Cell phones can be vital in an emergency. While nobody ever expects an emergency to occur, in the event of one your child and you can remain in communication if they have a cell phone. Sometimes it can be the safest form of communication in an emergency situation. Children who have cell phones can almost always reach their parent.
